Digital Technology Use and Mental Health Among Adolescents: Evidence from a National School Survey in Uzbekistan

Diloram G. Tashmukhamedova

Abstract

This article examines the relationship between the frequency and intensity of digital technology use and mental health indicators—anxiety, depression, and stress—among adolescents in Uzbekistan. It is based on a 2022 national school survey conducted with UNICEF and Uzbek ministries, covering 22,854 respondents nationwide. Results show that excessive device use (more than five hours a day) is associated with higher anxiety and depressive symptoms. Focus groups reveal a gap between parents' perceptions and adolescents' actual online behavior. The findings underscore the need for comprehensive digital well-being programs and digital hygiene education in schools.
