“Subaşı” and “çavuş” are the military titles which have been widely used in the states of Turkish civilization. Even though these titles were transmitted to the Ottomans with different forms of pronunciation that of from Central Asia, in terms of functionality, they had been used in the history of the organisation and presented continuity. Subaşı, one of these terms and which had been used to denote army, soldier commander in the Middle Age Turkish states, was used to denote both the officers who provided the security of the region that they worked and who were responsible for public order and security in the cities of the Ottoman State. While in Central Asia the term çavuş had been a title used for those working as ambassadors, in the Ottoman State it varied in terms of use and acquired an identity of organisation. Even though the two terms had changed both in terms of character and pronunciation, they continued their existence till the Ottoman State. This situation is the indicator of traces of the Turkish civilization in the Ottoman State, or in other words, the cultural continuity. In this article, observations will be made on the mentioned titles concerning their uses and functions, first, in the Central Asia, then, in the organisational structure of the Ottoman State.
