Abstract
Kosova could not be able to provide education in Turkish language for a long time after the Ottoman rule since 1912. However, it has been under the dominanace of Serbians between 1912 and 1940, although it had a multi ethnic and multi culture structure. In 1945 with the foundation of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, all the communities inside it started to gain their rights for education in their mother tongues. The Turks could gain this right in 1951 with a slight delay. At first, Kosova has been legally recognised as an autonomous region inside the former Yugoslav Federation. After the disintegration of the Federation in 1990’s and the war between the Serbians and Albanians due to the ethnic differences and political pressure the status has changed and the responsibility has been handed over by the United Nations. Apart from the fact that the period between 1912 and 1945 after the Ottomans has been the dark period the turks could legally benefit from the right of education in mother tongue from 1951 to 1991, in spite of the fact that some governmental problems or intercultural conflicts in the following years affected the education in Turkish language. It strikes attention that there has been a dicrease in the number of people studying in Turkish after 1991. Even if the education in Turkish language in Kosova was limited, it has continued since 1950’s regardless of the status, and there was an instruction in Turkish language in higher education as well. It will be focused on the subject of higher education and analysed in detail in this paper. At present, Turcology education in the level of higher education is beeing given only at the University of Pristina, in the faculty of Philology, in the department of Turkish Language and Literature.
