This study investigates metaphors of woman in Turkish proverbs and idioms in order to reveal cognition and metaphor relationship considering the language used by women and language towards women as classified by Lakoff (1975). Long standing metaphors are indicative of socio-cognitive structure behind cultures (Lakoff ve Johnson, 2003). Therefore, metaphors of woman in Turkish proverbs and idioms that are thought to reflect cultural cognition are contrasted with contemporary metaphors produced by two respondent groups of different sexes whose urbanization levels are found high. In conclusion, it is seen that conventional viewpoint towards women in the proverbs and idioms does not correspond with how modern urbanized Turkish women think of themselves, which denotes women’s changing social values in Turkish society. However, men seem to think in the same way as reflected in the metaphors in the proverbs and idioms to some extent.
