ǾAŧŧār, who had a deep influence on Turkish Sufi literature, was born in Nisabur between H. 537-570 (1142-1145) in the late years of Khorasan, Seljuk period. The poet, who spent his childhood and adolescence in Tun as can be understood from his works, states in is poems that he adopted the word “Herbalist” as a pseudonym since he treated patients as he was a doctor and a pharmacist. According to the information given by the literature and by some of his poems, ǾAŧŧār traveled quite a lot beginning from his childhood and particularly after he devoted himself to Sufism; he went to Iraq, Damascus, Egypt, Mekka, Medina, India and Turkistan, and after those journeys, he went back to Nisabur and retired into seclusion. At the end of this life of seclusion that lasted for a long time, at a very old age, he was martyrized by the Mongolians in Nisabur. The poet who studied science in addition to being a herbalist acquired Sufi knowledge beginning from his adolescence and served various sheikhs, read many books about prophets and saints and collected poems and stories about Sufism for 39 years. He was thus influential on religious and Sufi literature in Anatolia, primarily on Mevlana, and was a very important figure for both Persian and Turkish literatures.
