One of the measures used by the researchers, who work on the relationship between the languages in the world, in order to distinguish those languages is the method of word derivation formed according to the structure of each language. Method of word derivation indicates similarities between related languages. On the contrary, among the languages which have no relationship, there are differences. However, some word derivation methods might show similarities for the languages that belong to different language families. Alternation, used as a word derivation method, has been a method that is different from derivation by affixes although it is not widely known and a method that has associate Turkish with Indo-European and Semitic language families. With the aim of researching the importance of alternation in Turkish, which means changing the meaning of the word by an alteration in the sound, and as a result which means deriving a new word, the work called Dįvānu Luāāti’t-Türk has been chosen since it includes various words and grammar rules that belong to various Turkish dialects and with the analysis of this work a historical approach is adopted.
